The CRI Process
Cat Rescue, Inc. is not an animal shelter, we are a home-based rescue group and as such does not take owner surrenders or remove cats from private property. What we offer is a way in which cat lovers can take an active role in helping cats find the kind of home they deserve.
In our 10-year experience, we have found that there is no shortage of people who wish to call or e-mail us detailing their situation and allow us to deal with it for them-our resources simply do not allow us to offer this level of service. Cat Rescue, Inc. is prepared to help, however our assistance requires your participation as well as your financial assistance.
Kittens/Owner-Surrenders/Strays
Each year, hundreds of people contact us to ask if we can take their cat because they are moving, getting married, getting divorced, having a baby or any one of a dozen reasons. For those who wish to surrender an animal, this is what we offer:
•You provide the temporary or foster home
•If you are trying to capture a stray or semi-feral, we have humane traps to lend-a $20.00 deposit is required
•We will assist you with bringing your cats shots (FeLV, Distemper, etc.) up-to-date
•Obtaining low-cost spay/neuter services (your expense)
•Listing your adoptable cat on our website as a "courtesy listing", there is no fee for this, but donations are appreciated
•Inviting you to bring your cat to PETsMART on Saturdays to allow you to show your cat to prospective adopters
MGFT!
The official CRI definition of "insanity" is, doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result.
During the spring and fall "kitten seasons", we are usually contacted by pet owners whose cat had a litter of kittens that need new homes.
For these pet owners, we offer the above assistance with this requirement-Momma Get's Fixed, Too!
It is pointless to find homes for litter after litter of kittens without addressing the source of the problem-an unfixed momma-cat. Cats do not "need" to have a litter of kittens and the world doesn't need another litter of kittens that leave the animal welfare community rushing to find a new home for them. Cat Rescue will assist pet owners with the first litter of kittens, but only if the momma-cat is altered to assure that it's the last litter.
Your Participation is Required
As stated before, Cat Rescue, Inc. is happy to help cat lovers who will take an active role in finding a new home for the cat(s) they wish to help but only if they will take an active role in doing the right thing for the animal.
Those who wish to simply surrender a cat and walk away will be referred to their local animal shelter.
Yes, it takes some time and some effort to help homeless, lost and unwanted animals, but we believe that part of the pet overpopulation problem stems from a history of animal shelters providing an easy means by which people can simply divorce themselves of the responsibility of a companion animal.
Too many people simply walk away and lie to themselves that the cat they surrender to an animal shelter will find a new home and as the numbers from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services indicate, that just isn't so.
Of the 158,000 cats that were admitted to Virginia animal shelters in 2003, only 34,000 were adopted by new owners, so every cat that is surrendered has only a 20% chance of being adopted!
Don't let the cat you are caring for become a statistic! The CRI Process helps keep cats out of animal shelters and in the laps of caring pet owners where they belong!
